So, you've bought a nice piece of leather tack? Keep it looking brand new and get your money's worth with these simple tips.
Proper cleaning, conditioning, and storing is key to making a good quality saddle or bridle last a lifetime. Leather is a natural, biodegradable material and must be treated as such, but with a little time and dedication, you can easily keep your tack in top form. Looks are not your only concern when it comes to leather care, however. You also want to ensure the rider's safety. Worn or damaged leather can break unexpectedly, causing problems for both horse and rider.
All leather
equipment should be wiped down after you ride, every time, whether you're
schooling, showing, or enjoying a relaxing trail ride. Although it's not always
practical to do a full cleaning of your saddle every single time you ride, even
using a clean, damp cloth to quickly wipe it down will remove irritants such as
sweat, salt, dirt and other debris that can damage leather, as well as your
horse's skin.
Ideally, all tack
should be deep conditioned throughout the year, depending on use. Deep
conditioning differs from your normal cleaning and conditioning routines in
that it penetrates and moisturizes deep down into the leather fibers instead of
simply treating the surface. When finished, simply allow the piece of tack to
air dry naturally away from heat.
When the season is
over and cleaning is finally done, finding a good place to store your leather
goods is of the utmost importance. Leather must be kept in a clean, dry,
climate controlled area away from direct sunlight. UV rays can degrade leather,
causing it to dry out and crack, while excessive humidity can cause moisture
damage and mildew. If you prefer to
cover your saddles and bridles while stored, be sure to use breathable
materials. Covering tack with plastic or even locking it away in an airtight
trunk can make the leather sweat, causing more harm than good. Also, always be aware for
what your saddle is sitting on or even how your bridle is laying or hanging, especially if
it's going to be stored for a long period of time. Remember, leather is pliable
and will form to its surroundings.
